Resources for Roanoke Students

While the SSD office is located in Blacksburg, they are available for remote meetings visa phone or Zoom. After you contact SSD, they will work with you to schedule your appointment as soon as possible.

Medical/Health Center Access

Students enrolled in programs at the Roanoke Higher Education Center and the Health Sciences and Technology campus will find a wealth of information about Health and wellness resources available to them, including urgent care and counseling services. Please visit this page to learn more.

New and replacement Hokie Passports are issued by Hokie Passport Services in the Student Services building on the  Blacksburg campus.

International student services are provided remotely by the Cranwell International Center for VT students with a Blacksburg-campus I-20 or DS-2019 form. Students may arrange one-on-one Zoom sessions with immigration advisors  as needed, or advisors may provide information sessions and/or one-on-one meetings in Roanoke if arranged in advance. Contact international@vt.edu or 540-231-6527 to request a meeting.

Roanoke-based students have access to all library services available to Blacksburg students, both online and in person. Services can be found on the main library website. New in 2020, the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute Health Sciences and Technology Library is open to students in Riverside 4. 

Counseling

Counseling is available to Roanoke students with Dr. Jennifer Slusher 5 days a week on the 2nd floor of 1 Riverside Circle. The Blacksburg counseling center is always available to Roanoke-based students as well. Counseling is included in the comprehensive fees. Call Cook Counseling at 540-231-6557 to set up an appointment and please indicate that you are located on the Roanoke HS&T Campus.

Students have free, 24/7 access to virtual care services with TimelyCare – the virtual health and well-being platform from TimelyMD, designed for college students. With TimelyCare, students have access to:

• unlimited on-demand mental health support 24/7, available to all Virginia Tech students, through TalkNow,
• unlimited access to health coaching, available to all Virginia Tech students,
• and scheduled counseling sessions, limited to 12 sessions per academic year, available to all Virginia Tech students throughout the United States.

All VT graduate students with a valid Virginia Tech ID have access on a  first-come, first-served basis to a shuttle service between Riverside 1 on the Roanoke HS&T campus and the Blacksburg Campus, free of charge. More information can be found on the VTC website and on the Virginia Tech Parking and Transportation website, including a current schedule.

Professional Development Workshops

Some professional development workshops are provided through the Graduate School in the Graduate Life Center, or at other Blacksburg campus locations. If five or more Roanoke-based students request a session and identify a date and time, Graduate School staff will provide the session in Roanoke, or virtually but at the convenience of Roanoke-based students. Find a list of programs in the GLC weekly newsletter or reach out directly to grads@vt.edu to request webcasting or in-person delivery in Roanoke.

Career and Professional Development

Career and Professional Development at Virginia Tech offers guidance and skill development opportunities to all VT students. All students are welcome to visit during office hours in Blacksburg to use the Career Resource Center, to take full advantage of the website, and to seek assistance from CPD professionals. In addition to individual consultations, CPD provides workshops on a variety of topics, including career fair preparation, resume, CV, and cover letters,  job search, and job offer evaluations.

Writing Center Services

The Virginia Tech Writing Center is a free service for all Virginia Tech students, faculty, and staff, at all levels.  It has modeled service for both groups and individuals in Roanoke. You can also find information about virtual appointments on the online appointment request form. Online writing sessions function like  face-to-face writing consultations in the VT campus Writing Center, except the online sessions are held virtually via Google Hangouts and Google Docs using a VT email account. For more information, please contact Jennifer Lawrence at jlwrnc@vt.edu, and indicate that you are located on the Roanoke Campus. 

Webcasting classes can be requested by all VT students, and should be coordinated when course request opens for the intended semester. Students should contact HST IT staff to begin dialogue with the main campus IT and the instructor of the course. When selecting courses, you can also determine their web capability by checking the codes available on the Registrar’s Office website. Students may also reach out directly to professors to request other ad-hoc arrangements.
